Inside the Vanguard: how we scout the next pro roster

Scouts observing trial matches from the analyst booth

Every season, around two hundred players enter our open trials. Fewer than ten sign academy contracts. This is not because talent is rare — it is because pro play demands things the leaderboard never measures: comms under pressure, coachability and the humility to play a role instead of chasing highlights.

Stage one: open trials

Trial weekends run the first Saturday of each month. Players queue into mixed lobbies while our analysts score three things: callout quality, positioning discipline and tilt response. Aim matters, but it ranks third on the sheet — mechanics can be drilled, temperament cannot.

Stage two: VOD homework

Survivors receive two pro VODs and one of their own trial games with a simple brief: break all three down in writing. We are looking for pattern recognition. The players who spot the enemy's default setup on round four are the ones who get the callback.

Stage three: the comms test

Finalists play a scrim with their microphone scored, not their crosshair. Short calls, correct priority, silence when someone else is clutching. Milo Leone — now starting for Dusk Counter — passed this stage with the highest comms score we have ever recorded.

What happens after signing

Academy contracts run one split: weekly drills, monthly reviews and guaranteed bracket minutes. Eleven academy graduates now start on pro rosters across our five squads. The pipeline works because every stage selects for the same thing — players who make their four teammates better.
